The Live Version...

So in keeping with my New Year's resolution of having more fun, I dropped everything, scooped up one of my BFF's in Philly and ran up to New York City for a night of wine and music!

We had a great time and got to see the amazing John Forte play at the City Winery. He had invited me earlier in the week to come and see him perform the song that he had written, inspired by one of my paintings. (For that story click here!) Obviously, I was super excited to see him play it live and was floored by the whole experience. Having only heard a studio version- which was haunting and beautiful, it was crazy to see it played live, not just by John but by his whole band. For lack of a better word, they jammed the hell out of it! It was so fun to see the band and the audience vibing and getting into it. Witnessing what started out as a very private and personal artistic exchange, being shared with a bunch of other folks was really a beautiful and inspiring experience!

Elegant and Rustic

So, I've been busy cooking up some new designs and have finally taken the time to snap a few photos to share with you! I love these new draped copper necklaces I started making this winter- they seem kind of elegant and rustic at the same time!

They make really amazing statement choker-esque necklaces (I think it would look gorgeous with a black strapless cocktail dress) or they can be worn casually- long and dangley over a simple tee.

Happy New Year!

I love this little period of time- after the holidays and before everyone goes back to work, and the new year starts. I get to spend time with family and friends, eat myself silly and treat myself to some well earned relaxation. I also indulge myself in ruminating about the past year, gauging if I've attained the personal goals I've set the previous new year. Luckily this year I have.

Each year I challenge myself both personally and professionally to

a) have more fun than the previous year
and
b) do things that scares me

I know it might seem simple, but in this day and age, in order to keep all the bills paid and the all ducks in a row, most of us are forced to work our little patooties off, leaving little time for fun and games. Fortunately, my work allows me to travel and visit cool places. More times than not, on those travels, I've been lucky enough to have good friends who are kind enough to take me in for a spell! So the fun part of my resolutions was easier to achieve than I thought it would be. (I'm in the process of planning some future trips, so if you're in the mood for travel or a visit, hit me up!) As far as the scary part goes, I've managed to take some risks this past year on some business decisions- let's hope they'll pay off in the future. (fingers crossed... stay tuned!)

Anyhoo, I hope everyone is as excited for the new year as I am!

Guess who's work is pictured on the FRONT page of the of the Baltimore Museum of Art's website?!!!!

Holy smokes! I might just pee my pants! No, I won't, but I am doing the woot-woot dance with Ellie right now! I dropped off a collection of work there last week for a special holiday season event they are sponsoring, where artists are asked to create a series of work inspired by a piece the Musuem's collection. I chose to focus on their cyanotypes (click on this link to what cyanotypes are!) and was floored when I went to the website and saw my piece! AND the buyer for the museum already called to let me know they sold a piece and asked me to bring more work in! Oh happy day!

Spent a lovely day in Ardmore at the Clover Market on Sunday. One of the toughest parts of vending at all these great markets, is that I rarely get time to shop them.

Luckily my sweet hubby came and spent the day with me, and I got a chance to slip away a few times to see some of the other vendors. I grabbed a really fun locket from Charms City Crafts- it's gigantic! I'm talking Flavor-Flav gigantic! It has a blank face and I'm trying to come up with a Yummy design to decorate the face! I'll keep you updated on how it turns out!

It's hard to say goodbye. It's such a shame too.

I really loved the Fenton Street Market... its coordinators, its vendors and its many wonderful volunteers and sweet customers. I want to thank Hannah and Debbie and their terrific crew, for doing such a great job growing and developing this market these past few years. It's a shame that bureaucracy and red tape has to step in and ruin a perfectly good thing. Personally, I gained so much from being a part of this endeavor and feel lucky to have taken part. It was here that I was able to start, grow and develop my own small business. For a small vendor fee, I got to test market my latest designs, sell my work, grow my customer base, network with shops, meet many friends, and was inspired each time I vended by the sense of community that this market produced. Again, many thanks to you all!

Made in the USA...Sweet!

I'm getting ready to send a shipment of goods down to the National Archives in DC. (Yes, you read that correctly!) And I thought I'd share my newest packaging with you. Recently, many of the nations best museums were called to task for not carrying merchandise in their gift shops that was made in the United States. Well, many of those institutions took action and stopped by the Buyer's Market of American Craft this year to shop and see what American artists have to offer! So when traveling this year to our nation's capitol, turn over your souvenirs and gift shop finds and see where they were made! I'm just thrilled to say that my work can now be purchased at the National Archives gift shop and as you can see, I've proudly displayed their place of origin!

So, this should be a pretty epic weekend for my family, as we are all convening in the hills of West "By God" Virginia.

I am just thrilled and can't wait to see everyone in their natural habitat! My dad has composed a 15 page "pamphlet" of remembrances of life on his family farm and I'm sure it will bring lots of laughter and even more "remember whens". He also sketched out a big map of their farm, which I will post later! My big brother and his family will also be in attendance, and I am so excited to see my little niece Madalyn (named after my mom) and finally meet my newest niece, Samantha. Rest assured, there will be many pics to follow!!!

I had an amazing time in Atlanta this weekend at the ICE show! I flew down on Saturday, and since my flight had gotten cancelled the night before, I ended up making it to the show just in the nick of time! Luckily, I burned through my set up and was ready for business with only minutes to spare!

My neighbors this time were from Atlanta Sarahlou Designs. They make the most adorable clothing, repurpose-ing vintage items with their own designs, appliques and funk! Every time someone tried on their clothes, they looked so cute, I wanted them to buy them! I ended up with a ridiculously cute dress that I just can't wait to wear! I need to have it taken in a bit, so if you know of any good seamstresses, let me know!
I also picked up a really cute, teeny tiny hat from Kathleen of Black Gardenia Designs It's not the one pictured below, but be sure, you will see it in photos of me to come!

I met Kathleen at the show last year and she was sweet enough to cart me around town while I was there! After the show we ended up hanging out for a bit at my hotel, The Artmore. (which was AWESOME, by the way) and had dinner a really great little pizza place within walking distance.

Another fun thing happened! One of my oldest and dearest friends stopped by with her husband and two little girls in tow! I've known Amy since we were her daughters age and was thrilled to see them at the show this weekend!

So all in all it was a great trip, my only regret is that I didn't know that Mumford and Sons were playing in ATL on Sunday, I figured this out on the plane on the way home! Had I known I would surely have stayed another night!!!

I'm excited to say I'll be Atlanta bound this weekend!

I'll be vending at the ICE show again and can't wait! Last fall I went down with the hubs and had a blast. Great music, great food, and most importantly great vendors! The show has a fun vibe and hosts one of my favorite treat vendors... the King of Pops! His gourmet popsicles are out of control good, so much so, that Paul almost spent all of our profits on Balsamic raspberry pops for him and chocolate sea salt pops for me! Anyway, I'm going to do my best to limit myself to only 2 per day. We'll see how that goes!

Had a great time at BUST this year! Thanks to everyone who stopped by! I made some great new friends and got some really cool new goodies! I traded with Rebecca Ann Rakstad of Rarrar Press and got these fun letterpress postcards, of course, I got the one below for me :o) and

this one for my bro in Costa Rica. (except the hearts are in Baltimore and CR!)

I also got to trade with Shara from Shara Porter Designs! It was so hard to choose since I love all of her designs. (I ended up getting the ladder purse below...)

Here are a few of her other pieces. FYI she's based out of Massachusetts and was super fun to be neighbors with at the show!!!

All in all it was an easy trip, except after the show the traffic was so gnarly that I had to jump out of my cab and hoof it 20+ blocks so I would make my train home! It was funny, cuz I was sitting in the cab thinking, I could get there faster on foot. After sitting there for 20 minutes, not going anywhere, and having this internal debate going on, I told the driver I was getting out. He kept apologizing for the traffic, like it was his fault! It was kinda sweet! Anyway, I made it there in time and got home safe and sound. :o)

Art Star Wrap-Up!

So the show this past weekend in Philly was great! The weather wasn't nearly as bad as was predicted and it ended up being a really nice event! I met a bunch of Art Star's Boutique customers and had fun hanging out with my neighboring vendors, Jen from Pepper Sprouts, and Claudia from Claudia Pearson Illustrations.

Another Painting Finds a New Home

This painting "What If She Stood Up?" just found a new home! It's pretty big (approximately 3 x 6.5 feet) and the idea that comes to me when I see it, is if the girl stood up, she'd burst through the edges of the painting and out into who knows what! To me it's about our potential and all the "what if's" we go for and those we don't.

Plunging into some color for a bit...

So for the past few months, I've been completely absorbed with my jewelry business, and all of a sudden, I've had no less than four new inquiries regarding my paintings... weird right?! Anyway, since I work primarily in black and white with my jewelry line, when I set up to paint, I think my inner color spaz was just waiting to get out! (As evidenced by my palette above!) I've got 5 pieces in the works right now and I'll post them as they become whatever they become :o)

Upon Closer Examination...

One of the interesting things about being an artist, is that a lot of fun, strange, and unexpected things tend to happen in your life. You never know who you're going to meet, and what adventures lay ahead of you. It's a long story of why and how, but this past year I met up with the amazing singer, songwriter and Grammy award winning producer John Forte in New York. Basically, we decided to engage in an artistic exchange...

Premise- I'd bring up a painting for him, and in exchange, I'd get a song that he would create, based upon his interpretation of the painting.

Cool right?!

Said painting...

To me, the painting "A Closer Examination of the Components of Love" (pictured above) is about love, and all of the hardships and battles you face and endure in the name of love. Be it the love a mom has for a child who is driving her nuts, or the love that keeps you in a relationship despite the fact that your lover is also quite capable of making your life miserable.

Anyway, John's interpretation just blew me away. The song "Upon Closer Examination" he came up with is so intense and honest- it just breaks my heart and gives me the chills every time I hear it. I really love it!

Process

A lot of time was spent this month, getting my display ready for the market. I decided to make a bunch of "enlarged pendants" to hang up behind my jewelry and as fun display pieces.

It ended up being a great eye catcher and drew lots of folks to my booth! I thought it might be fun to share a few process pics of me and my honey working in the shop, getting all the "super-sized" pendants ready!

Here I am, using a bunch of off-cuts from some of my hubby's projects. In this pic I am taking templates and tracing them onto the wood.

Here Paul is, cutting out the shapes using a band saw. Elliedog aka Smelly Ellie is supervising and waiting for lunch break.

Next Paul used a belt sander to finish shaping them.

Next we drilled holes in the back for easy hanging and I finished sanding them till they were smooth and ready for their first coat of paint.

But first, we decided to take a break and get some fresh air, so we went out back to chill and take in the scenery...

Back inside, we put a couple of coats of paint on the plaques and left them to dry.

Once they dried, I took them back home and got to work!

Winter Wonderland

So I stopped by my folks house on the way home from the Buyer's Market for a visit and, of course, a home cooked meal... (red snapper- it was succulent!) It was so nice to just sit and relax, share the excitement of the show and see what was new at home. I decided to stay the night, and head out in the morning, since forecasts called for 5 inches of snow. Good decision!

I was treated to these lovely backyard views in the morning. Doesn't everything look so fresh and crisp! I'm sure some of these images will start to show up in new designs soon...

Wow! What an amazing week I had up in Philly at the Buyer's Market of American Craft! Basically it's 4+ days of selling my work to galleries, boutiques, museum shops all across the country! The caliber of work there is beyond... I tried to walk around and see as much of it as I could, but the event is so huge that it's impossible unless you spend 5 days there just roaming the aisles. My next few posts will give you a gist of what the event entails, what I did while I was there and where my work will be featured next!!! Below is a partial view of my booth! More to come...

I know this is gonna sound a little weird, being that I design jewelry, but I don't consider myself a fashiony type of person. Don't get me wrong, like any girl, I love fashion- it's just that I have a hard time figuring out what looks good on me.

So you can imagine, with a five day trade show coming up, I'm kind of stressing about what to wear! I need to look sharp, but I'm going to be on my feet for hours and will need to be reasonable comfortable. I also need to create outfits that complement my jewelry, not over power it. So I did what any smart person would do... I consulted a professional! No, I didn't hire a stylist, I just went over to the amazing fashion blog "What I Wore" created by Jessica Quirk.

I really enjoy her style... she puts looks together that are fun, but doable, mixing vintage pieces with classic staples and pulls it off with ease and aplomb!

Late Night Sketchin!

Many artists I know keep sketch books and carry them with them wherever they go. Personally, I've never felt comfortable drawing in a book. I always feel constrained by the spine and the curve of the paper, basically it just doesn't feel right. So I sketch on loose leaf paper and keep them on file for reference. One of the best parts of my job, is getting to see drawings that I might have done one night at 3 in the morning, turn into a rockin pieces of jewelry! The final designs don't always look like the sketches, but in this case, they came out pretty darn close! These two designs above are probably going to end up being pendants for necklaces.

Like most people, I like to start off the New Year with a resolution. After years of the usual resolutions (self improvement... blah blah blah) I finally came up with a resolutuion that I can stick to and I have decided to have the same resolution forever more...

"To have more fun than last year!"

This year I can definitely say I held true to this resolution!

New York Wrap-up

So, I'm back from my New York trip and I have to say it was pretty awesome. There is something about the city that really makes me yearn for more, every time I head out of the Holland Tunnel.

The BUST Magazine show was really fantastic!

The show was packed all day and I couldn't have asked for nicer customers. Amy Sedaris was there, signing her new book. I hardly got a chance to leave my booth, but I was really impressed by the caliber of talented crafts people that were vending. Luckily my friend Lauren watched my booth so I could do a little holiday shopping while I was there!

Baltimore... I Luv U!

Just wanted to write a post about how grateful I am to live in a city that actively supports the craft community, that I am lucky enough to be a part of. This past weekend, the residents of Baltimore and Maryland were out in full force, showing their proclivity to buy locally handmade goods. If you shopped at Holiday Heap, Merry Mart, Out of Hand, Greenbelt Festival of Lights, you know how awesome it is to purchase items made by the folks at these shows. Putting on a hat or something that was made by someone you've met, somehow makes that item feel special, every time you put it on. And each time you buy something from a crafter, you are helping an artist follow their dream! (Sorry for being melodramatic, but it's true!) In this day, when almost everything is made overseas, and more often than not, in an unethical manner, you really are making a difference, by choosing to buy locally made goods! What a powerful thing!

As a maker, some of my greatest moments are having customers come back and saying how much they've enjoyed their purchases...it's so gratifying! I just wanted to say thank you to those of you who were kind enough to stop by and say hi. I don't get out of the studio much these days, so getting the chance to see you all in person is a wonderful holiday gift!

Almost every nite before bed, I like to drink a glass of milk. And more often than not, I end up blowing a few bubbles. I know it's juvenile, but it still does it for me.

Well, my husband is always asleep before me and this particular nite he happened upon me doing my thing. Needless to say, he was kind of flabbergasted upon witnessing my little ritual. Then, he was inspired to snap a few photos...

Trunk show...

All it takes is a few friends, some cocktails, some appetizers, and Yummy & Company!

Just pick out a time and date and invite a few (5-10) friends. Although I don't show up with an actual trunk, I do show up a half hour early to set up a few trays of jewelry. It's that easy. The host gets to pick out a free piece of jewelry and gets a discount on all of her purchases. All of the guests have a great time... eating, drinking, and trying on jewelry! There's no hard sell, there's no minimum purchase, just drinks, friends, jewelry, and good times!

Not sure why, but I keep jumping from super huge designs to super tiny ones! The ring above is a size 7.5 and measures about 3 x 3.5 inches.

These little guys are about .25 inches, if that! Look for more of this design soon, in stackable rings and necklaces (just waiting for my silver shipment to come in!)

Got the chance to go to NYC this weekend and, of course, it was amazing. I drove up with my buddy Lauren of Jersey Girl Design and set up shop on the corner of 21st and 8th Ave. Luckily, I had my wind proof display all ready to go, because the wind was whippin! As you can see in the photo above, I was all layered up! (beneath the puffy red jacket is another puffy black vest!) Despite looking like a big round cold tomato, I did manage to sell some jewelry, make new friends, and have a great time! I was super excited to see Kimm of Kimmchi Designs. We had a great time chatting about all things craft/NYC/Etsy/MICA!

I was even more stoked when she agreed to do a little trading! (trading=THE best perk of being a crafter!) I picked out this long sleeved tee and one of these in purple!

This weekend I traveled down in Leesburg , Virgina. It's been a while since I'd been, the last time I was there, I stopped by Luckett's (an amazing antique shop) and went into town for lunch.

This time, I went because my good friend Thea offered to host a trunk show for some of her friends. We all had a really good time, chowing down, drinking wine and trying on lots of jewelry. I just wanted to say thanks to Thea and Friends for having me, and being so welcoming!

Stopped by Paradiso (on the Avenue in Hampden) last week- I had delivered some work there a week beforehand and was stoked to get back there and take some photos of the shop!

Sharona and her husband have had the shop for several years now and have managed to combine antique, vintage and modern goods in a really unique way!

Their shop is super funky and has so many cool things! They have lots of furniture, home goods, and, of course, jewelry! (I will be doing a separate post about their fantastic jewelry selection!)

This is just a tid bit of what they have to offer- it's the perfect place to pick up a gift. Will post more pics later!

So one of my "craft dreams" came true! I officially have work for sale at Art Star!!!!

It's been a secret wish of mine, since I started making jewelry two years ago. In my opinion, it is the best place to buy indie craft in this region! Their roster of artists is stellar and I am soooo thrilled to be able to be included in the round up! If you're in the Philly region, you should really stop by, and see all that they have to offer. This weekend they are part the Fall Sprawl (see link for details!) And as always in the spring, you MUST go to the Art Star Craft Bazaar at Penn's Landing! Well, I guess I'll have to stop doing my happy dance and get back to work now!

Wow! The Brandywine Festival of the Arts ended up being a great show! The weather was great on Saturday and the shoppers were out in full force! I saw a bunch of friends from grade school through high school and had lots of flashbacks all weekend! :o)

I sold a bunch of my new work and had a blast hanging out with Jaime Zollars. She is super talented and a riot. At one point, I was laughing so hard I spilled my drink all over the front of my shirt! We shared a booth, so I finally got a chance to see her work up close- it's amazing- you can check it out here.

I love the silkscreened print above, and I got this tshirt from her, and I'm sure I will be getting many more in the future! We had a fun time brainstorming and talking art all weekend...can't wait to see all the new things we come up with as a result!

So the Buyer's Market was a pretty amazing experience. The market offers craftsmen the opportunity to show new work to buyers from all over the country. There were folks from all over the country, looking to fill their shops with handmade goodies. I decided to take a break from working today, to give my hands, wrists and body a rest, and take some time to digest all of the experiences I had this past week.

I met some really great artists from all over the country (and Canada) and had a blast hanging out with them. Everyone was so enthusiastic, driven, and fun. I learned so much, and got some great advice and critiques, which were much needed. It's always great to get the opinions and thought of others, to give you a perspective on things! I loved looking at all of the displays and seeing how everyone "conducts their business"! I had a great response to my new line (seen above) and am excited to start filling all of the orders I took this week!

Trees for some reason have been catching my eye, and it's safe to say, that no tree is safe from being captured on copper! It's amazing how different and unique they are all! Artscape 2010

I survived Artscape ! But I must say I could never have made it through with out my BEST buds! We took turns manning the tables, brought tons of food and beverages, and had a good time hanging out!

Despite the insane heat, we managed to have a really fun weekend!

One of my favorite parts of artscape, besides people watching, is the parade of artcars! Check out this amazing bug covered in pingpong balls!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that stopped by the shows this past weekend! Those of you who atttended Pile of Craft, got to meet my wonderful sister in law Susie! She did a fantastic job of manning the Yummy & Company table and said there were tons of people there!
I ended up down at the Inner Harbor, and had a lovely time vending at the AFTA show. I got to meet tons of "art advocates" from organizations all over the country!

The new ruffle rings were a huge hit!

Here, a customer was trying to decide between two of the gigantic, asymetrical ones!

There's something so nice about being near water... the breeze was nice bonus and the crowds were sweet! Hope you enjoyed yourselves too, and got lots of great handmade goodies!
